The Dropout: Limited Series (2022)

Limited Series
The Dropout

Critics Consensus

The Dropout succeeds more as a docudrama than a dark comedy, but Amanda Seyfried's disquieting portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes brings fresh blood to this retelling of recent history.

Love this bubbly funny show. The old guys are great but seeing Selena and hearing her say fuc k, just makes this show.

THE DEVIL WEARS ISSEY MIYAKE* Raised by both partisan parents in Washington and after dropping out of engineering school as a result of her dad's ill-fated job cut, 20 years old Elizabeth Holmes quickly learnt to master the mind games of self-serving attribution, passive-aggressive flattery, peer pressure, superiority complex and legal intimidation with bureaucracy on her way to set up a health care technology company. By luck of the devil, she met an immigrant millionaire businessman 19 years her senior during the school's program in Beijing who would become her lifeline sponsor and partner-in-crime. Relentlessly convinced her dean to aboard a biomed lab, Holmes led up the team to full shifts working on her #theranostics but sacked its most devoted chemist later for objecting her pitch of their first prototype blood test device to Norvatis using a #fake successful data. In her own euphoria, Holmes had confidently arrived to cloud the view of every big boy on the young and successful under impression of the rapidly rising Facebook, Twitter and Uber. Starting with a Silicon Valley cowboy investor followed by a school of dinosaur leaders at Walgreens and Safeway, Holmes then cajoled the secretary of state into lending "his human element as a strategic connection" within two hours of their first meeting to move her firm along the most critical regulatory process with the FDA. To add a little joy of vanity, Holmes hijacked the first iPhone modeler to design her "life saving" toy. As if these weren't enough for her insatiable pride yet, in a most likely means to avenge her teenage grudges when Holmes' financially burdened parents were once at the mercy of their established physician neighbour, she sued the old-timer for allegedly stealing her medical analyser patent by employing the most costly litigator (who would represent the infamous convict of Hollywood's #MeToo victims in recent years). Offended by more prejudice, the neighbour knowingly subpoenaed Holme's chief scientist to deposit her dirty laundry at the lab. Feeling distanced, betrayed and without legal protection by Holmes at such disposal, the scientist took his own life. Heartlessly, Holmes ordered the wife to return his working laptop and confidential information at once! I am not traditionally Christian but it pains me to say that, if Holmes runs free on millions dollar bail from sentencing this 26th September for her dire crimes, civilisation itself is doomed and dreadful than the Four Horseman of Apocalypse released on earth. Her courageous entrepreneurship in earlier years is all in vain. Based on true events and the ABC News podcast, check out how Tyler Shultz eventually blew the whistle on Holmes. *Entirely referred to ridicule Holmes' imitation of Steve Jobs' outfit style and no pun intended at the fashion designer brand.

Amanda Seyfried is incredible! Outstanding series with a few flaws but the main character is so compelling you'll overlook them. High binge factor. 9/10

Amanda protrays the person of interest to a T. PERFECT! Pretty solid show.

Dragged at the end a little, but overall a solid series.

A little too long but solid

Really liked it. Great cast, well acted.

what's there is great, but it just ends abruptly without a feeling of closure, similar to hulu's other original "Dopesick". it feels as though for both of these series, hulu decided there would be 8 episodes and didn't care whether the story was finished. both also depicted seriously harmful white collar crime, but presented a slap on the wrist at the end of the season as if it were a deadly blow to those criminal's careers, and it seems that there is a strong leaning towards revisionism, i.e. "we got the bad guys/girls and it's over now" when the sackler family's fines were a drop in the bucket compared to their profits, and balwani/holmes have still not been convicted of fraud. basically, i enjoyed the vast majority of these series, but when it comes to the ending they both fell disappointingly short in a way that felt like an advert for the existing medical establishment, as if it were expunged of these past scourges and as if these same types of issues were not still present in the country. i guess you can say this review technically has spoilers, but the dropout is based on a true story, so i sort of doubt that it matters.

The Dropout's pacing may not be for everyone but Amanda Seyfried's strong lead performance and the shocking central true story make this limited series a must watch.
  • May 13, 2022
Amanda Seyfried gives a decent performance, but the series is too drawn out and slow. This might have worked better as a made for TV movie rather than an eight part series. I was too bored to bother watching the whole run. There's not enough story to support the length so they filled it in with mundane languid scenes. Someone lied due to greed. Five words sum it up.
